The Legend of Vox Machina officially retconned a controversial kiss from Critical Role‘s original Campaign 1 stream.
With the departure of temporary companions Kash (Will Friedle) and Zahra (Mary Elizabeth McGlynn) at the end of episode 4, “Those Who Walk Away,” The Legend of Vox Machina passed over a moment that has sparked some criticism over the years. In the original Critical Role stream, Kash non-consensually kissed Keyleth (Marisha Ray) following the Slayer’s Take trials, stealing her first kiss. The pair later had a heart-to-heart about the moment, with Kash apologizing and Keyleth forgiving him. However, it’s one of a few nonconsensual moments from Critical Role involving Keyleth that The Legend of Vox Machina has passed over in adapting the stream.
How Vox Machina Changes Critical Role
This isn’t the first time The Legend of Vox Machina changed how things played out in Critical Role. Meeting Kash and Zahra originally happened prior to the Briarwood arc, as seen in Vox Machina Season 1. During the Briarwood arc, Vax also kissed Keyleth without first consenting, and she later told him she wasn’t ready to engage in a romantic relationship with him. With The Legend of Vox Machina, the team at Critical Role has streamlined multiple plot points from the original campaign and edited out parts such as the nonconsensual kisses. However, it has also added some curveballs, such as killing off characters that did not initially die.
Ray recently spoke with CBR about Keyleth’s journey this season. “Oh, man, it was such a fun season for us,” Ray enthused. “Obviously, Keyleth has a very big moment where she kind of comes into herself a little bit more and has a nice boost of confidence, gets some new abilities, and [has] a little magical girl transformation moment with a flashy wardrobe. She kind of has a nice little glow-up this season, and it was so great finally seeing that come to fruition as she gets some more powers outside of just throwing vines at stuff.”
Season 2 of Vox Machina sees the Adventuring Party seeking a way to defeat the Chroma Conclave, a group of chromatic dragons attempting to control Tal’Dorei. The new season opened with the four dragons laying waste to the city of Emon, where Vox Machina had recently laid down roots. The Chroma Conclave consists of Umbrasyl, the Hope Devourer; Raishan, the Diseased Deceiver; Vorugal, the Frigid Doom and Thordak, the Cinder King. Umbrasyl appears as the primary antagonist of the team this season.
