The trailer for Meg 2: The Trench has finally dropped, introducing audiences to a whole new level of deep-sea terror.

The trailer for Meg 2: The Trench, which was released on May 8, finds Jason Statham as the disgruntled rescue diver Jonas Taylor once again facing off against the massively murderous megalodon and a host of other prehistoric horrors. Statham is joined by fellow returning actor Cliff Curtis as James “Mac” Mackreides and Page Kennedy as DJ, all of whom are joined by newcomers Shuya Sophia Cai, Able Wanamakok, Skyler Samuels and Sienna Guillory.

The action-packed trailer begins with a close-up look at the prehistoric food chain, with a small reptile being snatched up by a somewhat bigger one, who in turn is taken by the always-impressive King of the Tyrant Lizards, a Tyrannosaurus. Of course, T-Rex is out of his depth this time, as the Meg asserts itself as the bigger, hungrier monster.

The Meg Returns With More Aquatic Monsters

Meg 2: The Trench is the hotly anticipated sequel to 2018’s The Meg, which starred Statham in a battle of life and death against the film’s titular prehistoric shark, all set amidst the background of a deep sea rescue mission gone awry. Just as The Meg was based on Steve Alten’s 1997 novel Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror, Meg 2: The Trench is also based on Alten’s 1999 sequel, simply titled The Trench. Meg 2: The Trench was officially announced in October 2018, less than two months after the first film premiered. In late 2020, it was announced that Tomb Raider 2‘s Ben Wheatley was coming on to helm the film, replacing Jon Turtletaub as director.

In April, audiences at CinemaCon were treated to an early look at Meg 2: The Trench‘s trailer, with reports quickly coming out to describe some of the wilder aspects of the film. It was reported that the trailer featured Statham facing off against an even more massive megalodon, as well as a flashback to the prehistoric era in which the aquatic beast takes on a lumbering Tyrannosaurus rex. According to CinemaBlend, this was followed by scenes of Statham leading his team through the present-day action, beginning with a trip into an unexplored trench where further ferocious creatures await.

Meg 2: The Trench swims into theaters on August 4.
