Having had plenty of success already, Avatar: The Way of Water has now topped the box office rankings for the sixth week in a row.
Avatar: The Way of Water has now topped the box office rankings for the sixth straight week.
According to Variety, the James Cameron film has drawn in a total of $4.6 million this week, bringing its domestic total to $582 million. Even with the new film Missing also out in cinemas now, it has been unable to topple James Cameron’s sci-fi epic. For comparison, that movie has managed a haul of $4.1 million, which puts it just behind the Avatar sequel. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and M3GAN are also $2 million each behind The Way of Water in box office takings.
It marks another successful week for Avatar 2, with the film also excelling in terms of its total takings. The Way of Water now stands at sixth place in the highest-grossing films of all time, having overtaken Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s earnings of $1.922 billion in total. Currently, Cameron’s latest effort has earned $1.957 billion. The next film to overthrow is Avengers: Infinity War, which has a top lifetime gross of $2.052 billion.
Not only has the Avatar sequel taken the box office by storm, but it has also been well-received critically. The Way of Water has already been nominated for 85 awards, including two Golden Globes, and has 11 wins to date. Its clear success recently led Cameron to confirm he will now need to make more additions to the Avatar series. “It looks like with the momentum that the film has now that we’ll easily pass our break even in the next few days, so it looks like I can’t wiggle out of this and I’m gonna have to do these other sequels,” the director stated. “I know what I’m going to be doing the next six or seven years.”
Avatar 3 Is on the Way
Little is known about the upcoming Avatar 3. However, the director recently revealed that the next movie will “explore new universes” and include a fresh look at the Na’vi. “I want to reveal the Na’vi from another angle because, for the moment, I have only shown their good sides,” Cameron said.
“In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Navi’s examples. In Avatar 3, we’ll do the reverse. We will also explore new universes while continuing the story of the main characters.” In addition, producer Jon Landau added that a follow-up may also see a “transformation” for Miles Quaritch, the antagonist in both Avatar films so far.
Avatar: The Way of Water is available to watch now in theaters.
