Marvel Cinematic Universe star Tom Holland revealed his sobriety and mental health struggles while discussing his upcoming Apple TV+ thriller, The Crowded Room.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Holland detailed how his role as Danny in The Crowded Room, a limited series inspired by a true story and the novel The Minds of Billy Milligan, had made him evaluate his own mental health. “I’m no stranger to the physical aspects of the job doing the whole action-movie thing,” Holland said. “But the mental aspect, it really beat me up and it took a long time for me to recover afterward, to sort of get back to reality.” In addition, the Spider-Man: No Way Home actor revealed he’d been sober for one year and four months.
Tom Holland’s Struggles With Mental Health
The actor recalled moments filming The Crowded Room that caused him to struggle. Nine months into filming the series, Holland found himself unable to detach from Danny, leading to a “bit of a meltdown” where he wanted to shave his head to separate them. However, he realized he was mid-shoot and couldn’t do it and ultimately recovered. Still, the actor noted he’d never experienced something like it before in his career. Following this role, Holland will take a break from acting.
Holland noted that speaking with psychiatrists and learning to understand Danny’s headspace gave him greater insight into his own mental health. In particular, he found himself better able to recognize the things he finds triggering that add undo stress to his life, such as social media. In August 2022, Holland announced his break from social media for his mental health, which he said tended to “spiral” when he read things about himself online.
“I get caught up and I spiral when I read things about me online. Ultimately it’s very detrimental for my mental state,” he explained at the time. “There is an awful stigma against mental health and I know that asking for help and seeking help isn’t something that we should be ashamed of, but it is something that is much easier said than done.”
Tom Holland’s Roles in Spider-Man and Uncharted
Before The Crowded Room, Holland most recently starred in a pair of blockbusters. In December 2021, he appeared in the massive MCU hit Spider-Man: No Way Home, which saw previous Web Slinger actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield cameo as Peter Parker variants. Next, Holland played protagonist Nathan Drake in the live-action adaptation of the Uncharted games in February 2022. Rumors indicate that despite his break, Holland may appear as a cameo in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
