The movie begins with Paul, who is a projectionist at Detroit theatre. He was reading about the disappearance of the Roanoke Colony in the 16th century. Paul then uses a headlamp to continue his reading to know what is happening.
On further reading, he discovered that only people holding sources of light are protected against whatever is happening in the darkness. The following morning, we saw television reporter Luke Ryder wakes to find out that the power is out. After leaving his apartment, he found out that the downtown streets are empty with abandoned cars and piles of clothing. He finds his television station also abandoned, and there he finds a recording that shows his girlfriend vanishing on air with the lights going out. He also saw a live feed from Chicago that shows a newscaster telling people to keep a light on themselves at all times.
Three days have passed since then, and now we could see Luke alone in the darkness, who is trying to scavenge flashlight batteries and even checking cars. Thankfully, he finds a bar powered by a portable generator, along with the bartender’s young son, James Leary. When asked to him, Luke understands that James’ mother is at a church down the street and will be returning soon.
From Luke’s explanation to James, we can understand that even it was eleven in the morning, but it’s still dark out. Thus we can understand that the sun is no longer providing light. James later joins with Luke. After that, Rosemary joins the team, who also makes her way to the bar thinking her son Manny might have been there with his father.
The third day of darkness arrives, we see Paul appearing in the street and suffering from a severe concussion. Even though he had been taken by the darkness, his headlamp had re-activated fortunately, and he reappeared. Paul meets the team and tells them about the mystery of the Roanoke Colony. It is a story about over a hundred settlers disappearing overnight, and now even they are experiencing the same thing. He tells them that there is a word called CROATOAN was found carved into a fence post at the empty colony.
The team later face an issue with the failed generator, as well as Paul needing medical help. Luke suggests going to Chicago, since what he saw in the live video feed. Luke and Rosemary go to the street to retrieve one of the abandoned trucks. But they soon return to the hospital looking for matches and batteries after their flashlights begin lost.
They again return to the state, but Rosemary goes into the search where the sound of a baby crying is coming from, to which Luke warns her not to, but she ignores it. And as expected, it was a trap. She was lured under a solitary street light and disappeared when the light went out. Meanwhile, at the bar, the generator suffers from short circuits causing the lights to flicker. Paul searches for James after he lost sight of James. He searches for James in the bunker tunnels below the bar, and when the lights fail, he vanishes. But James was safe since he had the glow-stick necklace.

Luke manages to push a truck back to the bar. He then manages to use the generator to get the truck started, and then escapes with James. While they were passing through the church up the block, James gets out to find his mother. Luke leaves from there but soon returns after seeing the word “CROATOAN” carved into the side of a sign. As soon as Luke gets out of the truck, the car battery dies, lights go out, and Luke disappears. James, after entering the church, covers it under the glow of candles which slowly start to burn out.
James wakes to daylight and sees that the last candle had been burning all night. Out of nowhere, a little girl appears and urges James to stay with her. She says that her name is Briana, and she has survived thanks to a solar-powered flashlight. But James is aware that the sun will no longer provide light eventually, and just like the flashlight, it will also die.
As they leave the church, they encounter a police horse eating the apples that have been fallen on the ground and decides to take them with them to Chicago. The sun sets on the children leaving the city, as the camera pans to the bar, where we could see the casting shadows of Luke, Paul, and Rosemary watching the two leave as the darkness falls. As it gets dark, Briana uses her light, ensuring protection against the darkness as they continue their journey.
