A listing on the Entertainment Identifier Registry suggests that a second season of HBO Max’s adult animated series Velma is in the works at WB.

A Season 2 of HBO Max’s adult-oriented Scooby-Doo prequel series Velma appears to have been confirmed — and an official renewal announcement is likely forthcoming.

According to the Entertainment Identifier Registry (EIDR), Velma Season 2 is currently in the works at Warner Bros. with a premiere window of 2023. For the uninitiated, the EIDR is “the industry-curated public registry of media assets.” Notably, for a EIDR user to register a new asset, they must be associated with a party that has been given the “Registrant” role by the EIDR itself.

Velma Season 1 Is Currently Underway

HBO Max’s Velma stars the voice of The Office alum Mindy Kaling as the eponymous mystery-solving teen. The adult animated series acts as an origin story for Mystery, Inc.’s resident bookworm, Velma Dinkley, as well as re-imagines the character as being of South Asian descent. In addition to Kaling, Velma‘s voice cast includes Glenn Howerton as Fred Jones, Constance Wu as Daphne Blake and Sam Richardson as Norville “Shaggy” Rogers. Velma initially received a straight-to-series order at HBO Max in February 2021. The show ultimately premiered its first two episodes earlier this month on Thursday, Jan. 12.

Warner Bros. and HBO Max opting to get the ball rolling on a second season of Velma early would not exactly be surprising. After all, while the show has divided critics and proven controversial among audiences, Velma‘s first season debuted to strong viewership numbers. In fact, the bloody Scooby-Doo prequel can officially boast having had the biggest premiere day for any HBO Max original animated series. “Thank you everyone for watching!” Kaling wrote in a tweet announcing the news. Still, it remains to be seen if and when HBO Max will publicly announce Velma‘s Season 2 renewal.

HBO Max’s official logline for Velma reads as follows: “Jinkies! This raucous reimagining of the Scooby-Doo franchise unravels the mysterious origins of Mystery, Inc. – as seen through the eyes of the gang’s beloved bespectacled detective Velma.” The show’s first season is slated to run for a total of 10 episodes. Following the two-episode premiere, new episodes are scheduled to similarly drop in pairs weekly through Feb. 9.

The first two episodes of Velma Season 1 are currently streaming on HBO Max. New episodes drop on Thursdays.
