Sony tapped screenwriter Kelly Marcel as the director of Venom 3 in October 2022. Marcel, who co-wrote Venom (2018) and Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021), will produce Venom 3 alongside Hardy. She will pen the screenplay based on a story by herself and Hardy as well. Other producers on Venom 3 include Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, Amy Pascal and Hutch Parker. Venom 3 will mark Marcel’s directorial debut. Ted Lasso‘s Juno Temple joined the cast in April in an unknown role.

Venom, which was released in 2018, was directed by Ruben Fleischer, while its 2021 sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, was helmed by Andy Serkis. Marcel has served as a screenwriter on both previous installments in the Venom film franchise and worked on the story with Hardy both times. Hardy confirmed in June 2022 that a script for Venom 3 was in the works with Marcel.

Will Sony’s Venom 3 Enter the Multiverse?

Venom 3 received the green light from Sony Pictures in April 2022, announced by Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group Chairman/CEO Tom Rothman during CinemaCon. While details regarding the plot remain under wraps, it was previously reported in 2021 that Venom 3 would “explore the multiverse” and see “Venom finally meeting and fighting Spider-Man,” though these reports have not been confirmed. Venom appeared in the post-credits scene for 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which saw Eddie Brock displaced from his own dimension into the MCU. There was also speculation that it would be Andrew Garfield donning the Spider-Man suit once again to take on Venom.

Serkis expressed his own ideas for a potential Venom threequel in October 2021, adding that Hardy and Marcel had thought about the movies as “a trilogy arc.” The director revealed that a meeting between Spider-Man and Venom was in the cards, though it was unclear when or how it would happen. “Everyone wants to know when Venom is going to meet Spider-Man, personally, it’s not going to happen,” Serkis said. “I’m kidding. It’s going to happen, the question is when. We don’t want to rush it.”

Venom 3 does not yet have a release date.
