Venom 3’s reported working title may be a reference to one of the anti-hero’s longest-standing villains, pulled from the pages of Lethal Protector.
The working title for Venom 3 has reportedly surfaced and it may hint at the threequel’s villain.
Per The Cosmic Circus, Tom Hardy’s next adventure with his symbiote alter-ego is being produced under the moniker “Orwell.” While some fans suspect this to be in reference to the author George Orwell, known for penning novels such as 1984 and Animal Farm, others have pointed out the name’s connection to Marvel Comics. Orwell Taylor played a key role in the 1992 comic book series Venom: Lethal Protector wherein he swears vengeance against the titular anti-hero after Venom smothers his son Hugh to death. Struggling with grief, he recruits some of his child’s grieving army colleagues and outfits them with high-powered armor, christening the group The Jury, and sends them on a mission to bring Eddie Brock down. At the time of writing, Sony and Marvel Studios have yet to address whether the connection is valid.
Venom 3 is expected to largely continue the story of Hardy’s Eddie Brock who is still struggling to work alongside the symbiote that’s become a staple of his life. Having thwarted the maniacal serial killer Cletus Kasady aka Carnage, the next step in his journey remains unknown. Following the conclusion of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, the second film in the currently incomplete trilogy, Eddie was briefly pulled into the multiverse for a cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home only to be whisked back to his own reality during that film’s post-credits scene. It remains to be seen whether this incident will be addressed in any way.
A New Director for a New Venom
As for Venom 3, the details of the story are currently still under wraps. Kelly Marcel, who worked as a co-screenwriter on the first two films in the franchise, will helm the project as director as well as write the script from a story by herself and Hardy. After Venom: Let There Be Carnage‘s positive reception amongst audiences, many fans were concerned when director Andy Serkis revealed that he wouldn’t be returning for the sequel due to plenty of other projects he wants to get off the ground. “I’ve got so many projects that I was just about to [work on], like Animal Farm for instance,” Serkis explained. “We were just about to go into production with that, and then we delayed as Venom came up. I really have to be very on top of the ones that I’ve been building to do for such a long time.”
Venom 3 does not currently have a release date.
