Aardman Animations confirms another Wallace & Gromit movie will release in 2024 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Wrong Trousers.
Aardman Animations has confirmed that another Wallace & Gromit movie is in the works.
On the official website for Wallace & Gromit, the studio revealed that the dynamic duo will return after their last appearance in the 2008 short film Wallace & Gromit: A Matter of Loaf and Death. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Oscar-winning movie Wallace & Gromit: The Wrong Trousers, Aardman Animations announces another installment will premiere on Netflix in 2024. “The Wrong Trousers was a special film for all of us at Aardman,” creator Nick Park remarked. “It’s wonderful that it continues to find new fans today and that we can bring those fans more adventures – and more inventions, more mishaps, and more problems for Gromit to solve.”
The cheese fanatic Wallace and his loyal canine companion, Gromit, first appeared in the 1989 short film A Grand Day Out. Since the franchise’s inception, Wallace & Gromit has won Oscars for three entries, including 2005’s The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. Beyond 2008’s A Matter of Loaf and Death, the film series received the spinoff Shaun the Sheep, which spawned two feature-length movies. In 2020, Shaun the Sheep moved to Netflix for its sixth season.
The Future of Wallace & Gromit
As for the upcoming untitled Wallace & Gromit installment, the film’s official logline reads: “Gromit’s concern that Wallace has become over-dependant on his inventions proves justified when Wallace invents a ‘smart gnome’ that seems to develop a mind of its own… As events spiral out of control, it falls to Gromit to put aside his qualms and battle sinister forces – or Wallace may never be able to invent again!”
Alongside the forthcoming Wallace & Gromit movie, Aardman unveiled the single-player VR experience of The Grand Getaway for the Meta Quest. The game is currently in production with a planned release window of 2023. Additionally, the Cartoon Museum in London will hold a Wallace & Gromit-themed escape room, and 30 performances of The Wrong Trousers with orchestral accompaniment will play across the United Kingdom.
Beyond the Wallace & Gromit franchise, Aardman Animations’ previous credits include Flushed Away and Chicken Run. The 2006 film Flushed Away stars Hugh Jackman and Kate Winslet in the lead roles as Roddy St. James and Rita Malone, respectively. Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis and Bill Nighy also make up the cast. In the stop-motion movie, Roddy, a wealthy pet mouse, winds up in the sewers and falls in love with a scavenger named Rita.
The untitled Wallace & Gromit movie currently has a 2024 release window. The Grand Getaway launches sometime in 2023 on the Oculus Store.
