Why Dave Bautista Will Never Play Batman’s Bane

Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista explains why it is unlikely he will play iconic Batman villain Bane in James Gunn’s DC Universe.

Actor Dave Bautista has revealed why he will no longer campaign to play Bane in the DC Universe.

Speaking with Insider, the Guardians of the Galaxy and Knock at the Cabin star explained that he is simply too old now to bring justice to the iconic DC villain. “I have had conversations with James [Gunn] about that but I think the direction he’s leaning in, completely rebooting that whole universe, he’s starting from scratch and starting younger and fresher and I think you need to do that,” Bautista, who is 54, said. “I think for the DC Universe to be revived, you need to start from scratch, and I think you need to start with younger actors.”

The actor continued, “You need to start to plan for the next 15 years, and I just don’t think you can do that with me. And I understand that. And, also, I have to say that I appreciate that because I don’t want to play a character that I can’t bring justice to it. I don’t think at this point in my career that I can bring justice to Bane anymore. I just don’t know if I could handle the physical part, and I don’t think I would have the longevity to plan ahead for films. So, I just don’t know if I’d be that guy.”

Dave Bautista Previously Wanted to Play Bane in the DCU

Since Bautista’s breakout role as Drax in Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), DC fans have been suggesting that the actor play Bane in the DCU. Bautista himself has even talked in the past about wanting to portray the character, stating in May 2021 that he had pitched the idea to Warner Bros. “There are certain characters I’ve latched on to over the past 10, 20 years, and Bane was one of them,” he said at the time. “I’d just love a crack at it. I think I could bring an interesting twist to it and I think I could do the character justice. Not only in performance, but also in physicality.” He continued, “I could…play Bane in a way that’s not only menacing and ominous but also freakishly intelligent. Bane would be the type of character that’s so menacing and so terrifying and so intelligent, he would hardly ever raise his voice.”

Created by writer Chuck Dixon and artist Graham Nolan, Bane first appeared in 1993’s Batman: Vengeance of Bane #1 (January 1993) and possesses both brute strength and exceptional intelligence. Bane is best known for his role in the Batman: Knightfall storyline, which famously saw the supervillain break the Dark Knight’s back. The character has previously been adapted to live-action in 1997’s Batman & Robin and 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, portrayed by Robert Swenson and Tom Hardy, respectively. Shane West also played the character in the final season of the television series Gotham.
