Why Star-Lord Ditches His Signature Helmet and Rocket Boots in GOTG 3

Star Lord flying in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) eschews his signature helmet and rocket boots in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 — and writer-director James Gunn has a very simple explanation as to why.

On Twitter, a fan asked Gunn why exactly the Missouri-born leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy ditched his helmet and rocket boots. “They have jet packs,” the filmmaker replied. “The rocket boots comparatively suck. That’s like cheap shit you get in the intergalactic version of Radio Shack. And Chris could never have done those amazing hallway moves with a helmet on.”

Pratt initially joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Star-Lord in Gunn’s 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy. He subsequently reprised the role in the films Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019) and Thor: Love and Thunder (2022). Prior to Guardians 3, Pratt’s most recent turn as Peter Quill came in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which premiered exclusively on Disney+ late last year.

Pratt’s Star-Lord is back in the newly-released Guardians of the Galaxy threequel, which serves to close the book on Gunn’s trilogy. At this time, it is unclear if Marvel Studios has any future plans for Peter Quill in the MCU. However, Pratt has stated that there’s always an avenue for the character to return, and that he would be more than willing to return to the role if asked. That said, he would want Star-Lord’s return to be worthwhile. Pratt recently clarified that he would never return to the MCU just for the sake of collecting a paycheck. Gunn, meanwhile, is turning his attention to building the new DC Universe as co-head of DC Studios. Gunn is attached to write and direct Superman: Legacy, which is currently slated for a July 2025 release.
