The Simpsons producer James L. Brooks recently revealed that the animated sitcom is enjoying a resurgence in popularity thanks to Disney+.
In an interview with The Guardian, Brooks outright dismissed claims that stated the 34-year-old animated series had outlived its popularity. “No! There’s actually a resurgence right now, because it’s on Disney+,” said Brooks. “People are doing binges, you know, and it’s reached a new audience. We feel it’s sort of a great reawakening of it.” Disney+ has been the exclusive streaming home for The Simpsons since the launch of the streaming service back in November 2019.
Created by Matt Groening, The Simpsons has been a mainstay on the Fox network since December 1989. As of May 2023, 34 seasons and 748 episodes of The Simpsons have been broadcast. Each episode is usually set in the fictional town of Springfield and follows the titular Simpson family, which consists of Homer, Marge, and their three children — Bart, Lisa and Maggie. Although some fans believe that The Simpsons has declined in quality (the show’s first 13 seasons are generally considered its “golden age”), the show remains popular with both critics, viewers and the Primetime Emmy Awards. In January 2023, The Simpsons was renewed for its 35th and 36th seasons.
The Simpsons on Disney+
With The Simpsons now under the Disney umbrella, the show has created several animated shorts for Disney+ that include other characters owned by the Mouse House. Some of the most recent include The Simpsons in Plusaversary, which had the family hosting an anniversary party for Disney+. Another saw Tom Hiddleston’s Loki crossover from the Marvel Cinematic Universe in The Good, The Bart, and The Loki while Welcome to Club saw Lisa interacting with several Disney princesses and villains. Maggie has also been the focus of two Star Wars crossover shorts — The Force Awakens From Its Nap (2021) and Rogue Not Quite One — the latter of which premiered on May 4, 2023, for Star Wars Day.
The Simpsons Still Uses the Same Voice Actors
For more than 30 years, the Simpsons family has been voiced by Dan Castellaneta (Homer), Julie Kavner (Marge), Nancy Cartwright (Bart, Maggie) and Yeardley Smith (Lisa), who all began voicing their respective characters on The Tracey Ullman Show. When the beloved family was given their animated show, Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer were added to the cast to voice various residents of Springfield like bartender Moe Szyslak and Ned Flanders, respectively.
All 34 seasons of The Simpsons, as well as the feature film and aforementioned shorts, are streaming on Disney+.
