Ron Howard is open to returning to the world of Willow and directing at least one episode of the sequel series if it gets renewed for another season.

Ron Howard is interested in directing for Disney+’s Willow.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Howard, who directed the original 1988 film and worked as executive producer on the TV series, said that scheduling conflicts prevented him from helming an episode of the show. He added that he’d like to do more with Willow if it continues. “I wouldn’t want to make any promises as I’ve already got a few things that I’m dreaming of doing,” he said. “But if we’re fortunate enough to be able to carry on with the show, I am going be as involved as I can be, as I was this season because it means a lot to me.”

The 8-episode first season of Willow returns fans to the world of Tir Asleen, where nelwyn sorcerer Willow Ufgood (Warwick Davis) leads a new team of adventurers — including the fated future empress Elora Danan (Ellie Bamber) — in a quest to save a captured prince and stop the machinations of the evil Crone. Reviews for the series have been largely positive, with critics praising the writing, sense of humor and Davis’ performance in the lead role. The season ended on Jan. 11 with the episode “Children of the Wyrm,” which concludes with a stinger teasing Season 2.

The Future of Willow on Disney+

Showrunner Jonathan Kasdan has expressed his hope that Willow‘s story will continue beyond just one season of television. “We’re certainly working at it,” he said. “And I’m begging [Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy] because working with these actors and this crew of filmmakers on this show has been the best experience. We still feel like there are a lot of stories and bigger places to visit.” Kasdan has also said he’d like to see another Willow movie come out of the show. “Where it seems to be that the street leads from movies to TV, I hope that we’re headed toward a moment where the reverse direction can be done too,” he said.

Howard’s most recent project is Thirteen Lives, a dramatization of the Tham Luang cave rescue of 2018, which is available to stream on Prime Video. He has also spoken about the possibility of directing a follow-up to Solo: A Star Wars Story, saying that that particular project likely isn’t a priority for Lucasfilm. “There’s some great characters launched, and the folks from Lucasfilm love the fans and really do listen so I would never say never,” he explained. “But I’m not aware of any concrete plans right now to extend the story or deal with that particular set of characters.”
