Marvel Studios is eyeing a March 2023 start date for Wonder Man, an upcoming Disney+ series starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Sir Ben Kingsley.
Wonder Man will reportedly be the next Marvel Cinematic Universe series to begin production.
According to the latest issue of Production Weekly, the upcoming Disney+ series will begin filming in March 2023 under the working title “Callback”. The first half of 2023 is looking to be a busy one for Marvel Studios, with three series and three films all set to begin production over the next few months. WandaVision spinoff Agatha: Coven of Chaos recently began filming earlier this January, with start dates for Daredevil: Born Again, Captain America: New World Order, Deadpool 3 and Thunderbolts set for February, March, May and June 2023, respectively.
Wonder Man was first announced in June 2022, with Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) attached as a producer. Andrew Guest (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Hawkeye) is an executive producer and is serving as head writer on the Disney+ series, with former Brooklyn Nine-Nine writers Madeline Walter and Paul Bradford Welsh also reportedly on board. While plot details for Wonder Man are being kept under wraps, rumors have pegged the series as a satirical look at Hollywood and the filmmaking industry.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Is Wonder Man
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who is best known for his role as Aquaman foe Back Manta in the DC Universe, was announced to be playing Wonder Man in October 2022. Created by writer Stan Lee and artists Jack Kirby and Don Heck, Simon Williams/Wonder Man first appeared in 1964’s The Avengers #9 as an actor and son of a rich industrialist who was imbued with ionic energy that granted him various superpowers, including superstrength, invulnerability and electromagnetic manipulation. Initially depicted as a supervillain, Wonder Man was later portrayed as a hero and founding member of the West Coast Avengers.
Wonder Man will also star Sir Ben Kingsley, reprising his role as thespian Trevor Slattery from 2013’s Iron Man 3 and 2021’s Shang-Chi. Courteney Cox, who returns to the role of journalist Gale Weathers in the upcoming Scream VI, and Bob Odenkirk, best known for playing fan-favorite character Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, are also reportedly part of the show’s ensemble cast. Although their casting remains unconfirmed by Marvel Studios at this time, Cox has been tapped for the lead female role while Odenkirk is rumored to be playing Simon Williams’ agent, metahuman Neal Saroyan, who will be a villain in the series.
Wonder Man will consist of 10 episodes. A Disney+ premiere date has not been announced by Marvel Studios at this time.
