Yellowjackets creator Ashley Lyle opened up about the future of the acclaimed genre-bending Showtime series, teasing an even darker story for later seasons.

In an interview with Empire, Lyle confirmed that cannibalism will not be the most shocking thing about Yellowjackets, hinting at their plans to surprise viewers with a more horrific revelation as the story progresses. “I guess we’ll find out if there’s a limit to how dark we can get,” Lyle said. Just like the first season, the next installment will once again feature flashbacks of how the titular all-female high school soccer team managed to survive the wilderness for nineteen months.

Following its series debut in 2021, Yellowjackets earned positive responses from critics and audiences alike, who praised the show’s complex and intriguing story, as well as the compelling performances of both its adult and teenage casts. It has also been nominated for a number of awards such as a Peabody Award nomination for Entertainment and seven Emmy nominations including Outstanding Drama Series. Ahead of its return for Season 2, Showtime has already given the series an early third-season renewal in response to its continued critical success.

What to Expect in Yellowjackets Season 2

Production on the upcoming Yellowjackets Season 2 began in August 2022, several months after the show concluded its 10-episode first season. The next installment will feature the return of leading stars Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Christina Ricci, and Juliette Lewis, who are reprising their respective roles as present-day Shauna, Taissa, Misty, and Natalie. Their equally talented younger counterparts are also coming back including Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sammi Hanratty, and Sophie Thatcher. They will be joined by Servant star Lauren Ambrose and Obi-Wan Kenobi actress Simone Kessell, who have been cast as adult versions of Liv Hewson’s Van and Courtney Eaton’s Lottie.

As seen in the previous teaser trailer, Season 2 will see the remaining survivors slowly descend into madness, as they brace for a harsh winter. It also continued to tease the mysteries surrounding their 19-month-long stay in the wilderness, and the irreversible effects and consequences that this experience has left them. In addition, the teaser also revealed the first footage of guest star Elijah Wood, who has signed on for the role of citizen detective Walter. Further details about Wood’s character are still being kept under wraps, but it looks like his storyline is connected to Ricci’s Misty.

Yellowjackets Season 2 is slated to premiere on Showtime on March 24, 2023.
